Safety and quality are EPIC’s highest priorities. As part of our commitment to continuous improvement of our Safety and Quality Programs, 21 EPIC employees recently completed the OSHA 10-hour training. In addition, Paul Kirksey, our Quality and EH&S manager, completed the OSHA 30-hour training at the St. Louis Safety Council.

The 10-hour OSHA training was completed over the course of three days in EPIC’s fabrication plant. Plant craftsmen, engineers and project managers from across the company attended. This training is a basic overview of what OSHA is and where to get information on specific topics. There were also group discussions of the top industry hazards. The training covered the following topics:

    • Introduction to OSHA
      • OSHA Act
      • General duty clause
      • Employer and employee rights and responsibilities
      • Whistleblower rights
      • Record keeping basics
      • Inspections, citations, and penalties
      • Value of safety and health
      • OSHA website and available resources
      • OSHA 800 number
    • Walking and working surfaces
    • Hand and power tools
    • Machine guarding
    • Lockout tagout
    • Electrical
    • Exit routes
    • Emergency action plans
    • Fire prevention plans
    • Fire protection
    • Material handling
      • Forklifts
      • Cranes
      • Proper lifting
      • Ergonomics
    • Hazard communications
      • Bloodborne pathogens
      • Intro industrial hygiene

OSHA training at EPIC Systems, IncThe 30-hour Training attended by Kirksey was a more in-depth training intended for Safety and EH&S managers leading a Safety Program. The training took place the same week as the 10 Hour training over the course of four days. The topics covered in this training include:

    • Introduction to OSHA – covering the same as above with additional topics including:

      • Competent person
      • Record keeping
    • Managing safety and health
    • Walking and working surfaces
    • Exit routes, emergency action plans, fire protection

EPIC has also started having weekly Safety Meetings with a team of individuals who are reviewing and adjusting our Safety Program moving forward. “Getting our people trained on safety from top to bottom just shows EPIC’s commitment to its employees and customers. We are taking steps to move to the next level,” said Kirksey. EPIC’s safety manual is currently under revision as well.
